Check Gear Ratio By YourselfAll the mechanical gadgets are powered with gears but they are extensively used in automotive industry. Gear is round shaped like a wheel which has several axles cut hold the gear in place while they rotate. To check the gear ratio of motor vehicle; one should have proper understanding of gear and its functions. The motor gear ratio relates to the number of time input shaft turns in association to the number of turns by the output shaft. The gear used in motors are pinion and ring gears. First, the teeth or the axles on the pinion and the ring gear has to be counted and some basic calculation required then. Follow the below easy steps:

  • Start counting the number of axles on the pinion gear attached to the crankshaft.
  • Once the teeth counting is done for the pinion; repeat the process with the ring gear. This gear relates with the gears in the vehicle transmission.
  • Now the final calculation; divide the number of axles cut on the ring by the number of teeth on the pinion. Say the ring gear has 40 axles and pinion with 10 axles; the ratio will be 4:1.
The above calculation concludes that; if the ring gear rotates one time, the pinion needs to rotate 4 times. The ring and the pinion gear produces the same power but spins slower and converts the pinion energy into torque. The ring and pinion gear ratio determines if the gear combination is ideal for torque or high speed. The higher torque in motor is used for acceleration and towing while the high ratio speed is used for on road cruising.
